华人开路先锋：圣马科山口

从洛杉矶往北走必须翻过圣伊内斯（Santa Ynez）山脉。翻山最近的山口就是圣马科山口（San Marcos Pass）. 目前既可以走海边平坦101公路，也可以走山里的San Marcos

最早修这条圣马科山口路的就是华工。工程师在设计好的路上插上木条，两队华工从这路两端开始修。【1】

华人开始来这个地区劳工种植葡萄橘子和蔬菜。该地区著名农场主Hollister家农场雇佣了许多华工。国会讨论《排华法案》时，Hollister出席听证会，赞扬华工。

首先发起修这条路的是6位医生和律师。他们雇佣了华工把原来的Fremont 路加宽.【2】

修这条路的时洛杉矶一家公司（Flint, Bixby and Company），这家公司拥有大片土地也急需打通从洛杉矶通向北方的这个山口。

1868-1869年间华工们铺平了Santa Ynez Turnpike Road，现在的名字是Stagecoach Road on Highway 154。当时只有手工工具。有一段路叫“滑溜石”全都是砂岩，华工只好路面上打出横向的

沟槽防止车轮打滑。至今，在步道上还能看见这些横槽。【3】

这段“滑溜石”目前是私人土地无法进去。4英寸深的轮槽让马车金属轮子走，轮槽已经被磨14英寸深了。这一段路约1500英尺长。【4】

从1861到1901年，圣巴巴拉一直依靠这条路通向北方。

华工的宿舍就在冷泉(Cold Spring)地区，紧挨着今天的“冷泉酒馆”（Cold Spring Tavern）。

冷泉酒馆：

这条路布满劫匪，几乎没人躲得过被打劫的命运。

1876-1882太平洋铁路公司窄轨火车道通车了，在圣伊内斯（Santa Ynez）开了一个火车站。1897年这条收费的路变成了县所有的免费路名为Stagecoach Road。1890年代，由于排华潮和铁路运输的发展，冷泉的华工们纷纷离开，有的华人去了圣巴巴拉有的去了种植园。

这条路对头开，拐着弧形，至今也是一条难开的路。1969年在George Hood and Fred Yoshino的指挥下建起了拱形桥（Cold Spring Arch Bridge）公路，完全跳过了这段艰险路段。

1974年美国土木工程协会将此桥命名为地标建筑。

华人的足迹遍布加州，这是美国垦荒人的业绩。一个圣马科山口长大的6年级学生写下这样一篇文字：“我出生的那个木屋，可能就是华人修建的。”【5】

今天我们享受着5G网络，大数据，谈论着人工智能的前景和电动汽车。。。。世界越来越生活舒适，此时抚摸着华工们100年前敲凿出了石头路上沟槽，感念开路先锋的辛劳，感到勇气倍增。
